When they do, patients are exempt from criminal prosecution in states that have passed medical marijuana laws.<\/p>\n\n    <\/div>\n\n<p>Medical marijuana laws vary drastically. This includes the regulation of dispensaries. Some states only allow terminally ill patients to use marijuana, while others are less restrictive.<br>\r\n<\/p>\r\n<p>A&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/state\/criminal-laws\/marijuana-possession-laws-by-state.html\">growing number of states (and the District of Columbia) have medical marijuana laws<\/a>. But remember, marijuana is still illegal under&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/cannabis-law\/cannabis-laws-and-regulations\/Federal-and-State-Marijuana-Laws-and-Your-Pot-Business.html\">federal law<\/a>. States marked with an asterisk (*) have also legalized recreational marijuana.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you have questions about your specific situation, consult with your doctor or a local attorney&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/lawyers.findlaw.com\/cannabis-law\/?fli=dcta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">experienced in cannabis law<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p><i><b>Note<\/b>: At least 18 states (including Texas, Missouri, and Georgia) have fully legalized CBD oil. CBD oil is a cannabis product with only negligible small amounts of THC. (THC produces the &quot;high&quot; associated with marijuana.) It also&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/medicalcannabis.utah.gov\/resources\/frequently-asked-questions\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prohibits<\/a>&nbsp;candies, cookies, brownies, and other edible products.<\/p>\r\n<p>Out-of-state medical marijuana patients must get a 21-day nonresident card in order to purchase.
