    Voting in South Dakota<\/span> requires eligible residents to register at least 15 days before an election and new voters to provide proof of citizenship<\/span>. Eligible voters must be U.S. citizens, South Dakota<\/span> residents, and 18 years old<\/span> by Election Day<\/span>, with no unresolved felony convictions<\/span> or court-declared mental incompetence. Voters can cast ballots in person<\/span> at polling places<\/span> with valid photo ID<\/span> or request absentee ballots to vote by mail.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n

    South Dakota<\/span> Voter<\/span> Registration<\/span> Requirements<\/strong><\/h2>\n

    SB175 does not affect anyone currently registered to vote. South Dakota<\/span> voters<\/span> who are already registered can still vote in both state and federal elections.<\/p>\n

    New voters and those restoring their voting rights<\/span> after being removed from the voter rolls must comply with the new requirements to vote in state elections<\/span>. In addition to existing requirements, voters must provide acceptable proof of citizenship<\/span>. This can include:<\/p>\n

    In March 2026, the governor signed SB175<\/a>. This new state law<\/span> requires all new voters in South Dakota<\/span> to provide proof of citizenship<\/span> to register to vote<\/a>. The law only affects new voters and does not affect a voter’s right to vote in federal elections.<\/p>\n
