What Does the Controlled Substances Act Do?<\/h2>\n

The act categorizes drugs into five classifications or \u201cschedules<\/a>.” The schedules reflect each drug’s medical use, potential for abuse, and status in international treaties. The CSA became law as Title II of the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act of 1970.<\/p>\n

The CSA places all controlled substances into five schedules at 21 U.S.C., Section 812<\/a>, labeling them with Roman numerals. Generally speaking, drugs included in Schedule I are the most regulated. They were deemed to have no medical value and high potential for abuse.<\/p>\n

The schedules descend from most dangerous to least dangerous. Thus, the drugs in Schedule V have low potential for substance abuse.<\/p>\n
