Many store policies allow returns if customers change their minds or receive unwanted items as gifts. This business practice is common since customers often like the extra flexibility.<\/p>\n

Yet, retailers aren’t legally required to accept returns in those cases. They must only honor the specific return policy they promise to customers at the time of sale.<\/p>\n

Federal Law for Customer Returns and Refunds<\/h2>\n

Federally, retailers must accept returns under two basic scenarios.<\/p>\n

First, federal law requires refunds if the\u00a0product is defective<\/a>. Small variations or cosmetic defects might not legally require a refund. But significant problems with the product’s safety or functionality could conflict with the product’s advertising.<\/p>\n

The second scenario is when the seller breaks the\u00a0sales contract<\/a>. Sales agreements are binding like other contract types.<\/p>\n

The Cooling-Off Period<\/h3>\n

The federal “Cooling-Off Rule<\/a>” gives buyers three days to cancel purchases depending on the value. Keep in mind that this option doesn’t apply to all transactions.<\/p>\n
