These TSA rules impact various stages of airport security, from what you can pack in your carry-on to what to expect during the security screening process.<\/p>\r\n<p>While you must&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/consumer\/travel-rules-and-rights\/air-travel-rules-faq.html\">adhere to these rules<\/a>&nbsp;to enjoy air travel, you also have certain rights. There are specific things the TSA can and can&#8217;t do throughout the security screening process.<\/p>\r\n<p>Below, you will find guidelines on:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Travel tips for transporting hazardous items<\/li>\r\n<li>Compliance with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/consumer\/travel-rules-and-rights\/lost-baggage-compensation-and-the-law.html\">checked baggage<\/a>&nbsp;and carry-on items<\/li>\r\n<li>What happens if you&#8217;re caught with a prohibited item<\/li>\r\n<li>Traveling with pets and service animals<\/li>\r\n<li>Your rights during different stages of the airline security screening process<\/li>\r\n<li>Other information<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Security Screening for Checked Baggage<\/h2>\r\n<p>With checked luggage, law enforcement officers and TSA agents focus primarily on identifying explosives. Agents need to ensure the contents of a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/consumer\/travel-rules-and-rights\/lost-baggage-compensation-and-the-law.html\">checked bag<\/a>&nbsp;won&#8217;t explode or combust in the fuselage (or belly) of the plane.<\/p>\r\n<p>Security officers use automated&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/videos\/inside-look-inline-baggage-screening-systems-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in-line baggage screening systems<\/a>&nbsp;(IBSS) to screen checked bags for explosives and dangerous items. Most checked bags don&#8217;t require a physical inspection. But, if an officer manually inspects your bag, they must leave a notice of inspection inside your luggage.<\/p>\r\n<p>If you lock your checked bag, make sure to use a TSA-approved lock (like a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.safeskieslocks.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Safe Skies Lock<\/a>). Otherwise, agents can cut off your lock if a physical search is necessary.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Airline Carry-On Baggage Rules<\/h2>\r\n<p>Most airlines allow passengers to bring one piece of carry-on luggage and one personal item onboard.<\/p>\r\n<p>Remember the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/frequently-asked-questions\/what-3-1-1-liquids-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">3-1-1 Liquids Rule<\/a>. This also applies to gels, lotions, and aerosols. This regulation means each passenger can bring one clear quart-sized bag onboard. This bag must hold all liquid items, and each container cannot exceed 3.4 ounces.<\/p>\r\n<p>This includes most toiletries, including:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Toothpaste and mouthwash<\/li>\r\n<li>Hairspray<\/li>\r\n<li>Cream-based makeup products<\/li>\r\n<li>Hand sanitizer<\/li>\r\n<li>Perfume and aftershave<\/li>\r\n<li>Other toiletries<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Determining what items fall under this rule can be difficult. For example, spreadable food items like peanut butter must meet 3-1-1 criteria. Frozen food items, like meat, are allowed as long they&#8217;re as frozen solid (including the freezer pack).<\/p>\r\n<p>You can pack solid toiletries (like deodorant) in your carry-on at any amount.<\/p>\r\n<p>The size restrictions above exclude&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/whatcanibring\/items\/baby-formula\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">baby food, baby formula, and breast milk<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>Most sharp objects are banned from carry-on bags. This includes box cutters, cigar cutters, and pocket knives. But some sharp personal hygiene items (like tweezers and razors) are allowable.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Going Through TSA Security Checkpoints<\/h2>\r\n<p>First, give your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/traffic\/drivers-license-vehicle-info\/getting-an-id--will-the-dmv-check-for-warrants-.html\">government-issued ID<\/a>&nbsp;and boarding pass to a TSA officer for verification. Some airports only require your ID at the TSA checkpoint. Regardless, you must still present your boarding pass before boarding your aircraft.<\/p>\r\n<p>You may need a new boarding pass if the name on the identification document doesn&#8217;t exactly match the name on the boarding pass. Visit your airline&#8217;s check-in counter if you need to do this.<\/p>\r\n<p>Some airports now use facial recognition and other biometric technology when screening identification documents.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/digital-id\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">This technology is optional<\/a>. You have the right to opt-out without losing your place in the security line. Inform the officer if you wish to not participate in this screening method.<\/p>\r\n<p>Next, remove any electronic devices larger than your cell phone from your carry-on bag. Put them in a separate bin. This typically includes tablets, e-readers, and laptops.<\/p>\r\n<p>Unless you are a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/consumer\/travel-rules-and-rights\/the-tsa-pre-program-overview.html\">TSA PreCheck member<\/a>, you must remove your shoes and 3-1-1 plastic bag of liquids before moving through the metal detector.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Religious and Cultural Needs During Screening<\/h3>\r\n<p>Loose-fitting clothing or head coverings may require additional screening by an officer. If you need to remove your head covering, you can request to do so in a private screening area. The TSA also outlines procedures for packing&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/tsa-cares\/religious-and-cultural-diversity\/religious-items\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">religious items<\/a>&nbsp;on its website.<\/p>\r\n<p>You have the right to decline this technology and opt for a pat-down instead. You may also need to undergo a pat-down if the x-ray machine or AIT indicates additional screening is necessary.<\/p>\r\n<h3>Transgender and Non-Binary Travelers<\/h3>\r\n<p>TSA officers no longer use&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/civilrights\/discrimination\/gay-and-lesbian-rights-sexual-orientation-discrimination.html\">gender considerations<\/a>&nbsp;when validating passenger identity. As of June 2023, the TSA uses a gender-neutral algorithm for its Advanced Imaging Technology (AIT). This technology is used at security checks to detect threats or prohibited items concealed on passengers&#8217; bodies. This gender-neutral advancement&nbsp;cut the false alarm rate&nbsp;in half.<\/p>\r\n<p>You have the right to decline this technology and opt for a pat-down instead. You may also be required to undergo a pat-down if the x-ray machine or AIT indicates additional screening is needed.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the event of a pat-down, you have certain rights:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>You can disclose your&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/lgbtq-law\/how-to-change-your-legal-name-and-gender-marker.html\">gender identity<\/a>&nbsp;and request an officer of that gender to perform the pay-down.<\/li>\r\n<li>You can request to receive the pat-down in private instead of at the checkpoint area.<\/li>\r\n<li>A traveling companion can join you during a private screening or pat-down.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to remove any clothing that could reveal sensitive body parts. But the officer doing the screening can ask you to adjust loose-fitting clothing.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Transporting Special Items During Air Travel<\/h2>\r\n<p>Some items require extra care during air travel. Reference the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/security-screening\/whatcanibring\/all\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">What Can I Bring?<\/a>&nbsp;section of the TSA website for security guidelines on transporting certain items, including:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Alcoholic beverages<\/li>\r\n<li>Batteries and lithium batteries<\/li>\r\n<li>Camping gear<\/li>\r\n<li>Compressed gas cylinders<\/li>\r\n<li>Currency, coins, precious metals, and jewelry<\/li>\r\n<li>Firearms and ammunition<\/li>\r\n<li>Hunting and fishing equipment<\/li>\r\n<li>Knitting needles and needlepoint<\/li>\r\n<li>Lighters and matches<\/li>\r\n<li>Musical instruments<\/li>\r\n<li>Paintball equipment<\/li>\r\n<li>Parachutes<\/li>\r\n<li>Scuba equipment<\/li>\r\n<li>Sporting equipment<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Air Travel With Pets and Service Animals<\/h2>\r\n<p>Rules for traveling with a pet vary by airline. Check with your air carrier to find procedures for bringing a pet onboard.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/civilrights\/discrimination\/air-passengers-with-disabilities.html\">The law requires<\/a>&nbsp;airlines to allow service animals on flights if they meet certain requirements.<\/p>\r\n<p>The TSA&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/frequently-asked-questions\/can-i-take-my-pet-through-security-checkpoint\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">will screen all pets and service animals<\/a>&nbsp;at security checkpoints regardless of the airline you&#8217;re using. Safely remove your pet from their crate or carrier and place their crate or carrier on the conveyor belt for x-ray screening. You must also walk or carry your pet through the metal detector. Agents may also perform a physical inspection of your animal.<\/p>\r\n<p>You have additional rights during the security process if traveling with&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/tsa-cares\/disabilities-and-medical-conditions\/service-animals\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a service animal<\/a>. For example, you can choose for yourself or your animal to get a pat-down instead of going through the metal detector. Live assistance is available from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (ET).<\/p>\r\n<p>AskTSA also answers questions on:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Identification<\/li>\r\n<li>Medication and medical conditions during screening<\/li>\r\n<li>Damages and claims<\/li>\r\n<li>And more<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Reach AskTSA by texting \u201cTravel&quot; to 275-872.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What Happens if I&#8217;m Caught With a Prohibited Item?<\/h2>\r\n<p>Attempting to travel with a prohibited item can result in steep TSA penalties and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges.html\">even criminal charges<\/a>. Depending on the item and the occurrence, you can also be disqualified from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/frequently-asked-questions\/who-can-apply-tsa-precheckr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TSA PreCheck eligibility<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<p>You also won&#8217;t get your item back. Prohibited items left at a security checkpoint are not returned to their owners.<\/p>\r\n<p>If a TSA agent discovers a prohibited item on you or in your baggage, they can issue a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsa.gov\/travel\/frequently-asked-questions\/notice-violation-criminal-charge\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notice of Violation<\/a>. This is a civil penalty with a fine, not a criminal charge.
