If you meet\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/immigration\/citizenship\/naturalization-requirements.html\">all requirements<\/a>, <span data-term-id=\"58915484\">U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services<\/span> (<span data-term-id=\"58915460\">USCIS<\/span>)\u00a0will schedule you for an interview.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2><span data-term-id=\"58915480\">English Language<\/span> Test<\/h2>\n<p>Applicants for U.S. citizenship must show their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/guides\/M-715_writing.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-term-id=\"58915480\">English language<\/span> proficiency<\/a>. <span data-term-id=\"58915472\">Permanent residents<\/span> or <span data-term-id=\"58915504\">green card<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915504\"> holders<\/span> applying for citizenship need not be completely fluent in the <span data-term-id=\"58915480\">English language<\/span>. But they must know enough to speak, read, and write <span data-term-id=\"58915489\">basic English<\/span> effectively.<\/p>\n<p>During\u00a0the interview, the examiner will test your English reading and writing skills by giving you a simple dictation test. You will also have to sign your name in English. The <span data-term-id=\"58915467\">USCIS<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915467\"> officer<\/span> conducting the <span data-term-id=\"58915466\">English test<\/span> will assess the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Speaking English<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 There is no separate test for the ability to speak English. While the <span data-term-id=\"58915467\">USCIS<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915467\"> officer<\/span> verifies the information on <span data-term-id=\"58915476\">Form N-400<\/span>, they will check the applicant\u2019s ability to speak and understand English.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reading English<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The <span data-term-id=\"58915467\">USCIS<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915467\"> officer<\/span> will ask the applicant to read aloud materials provided by a <span data-term-id=\"58915467\">USCIS<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915467\"> officer<\/span>. This part tests the citizen applicant\u2019s ability to read English.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Writing English<\/strong>\u00a0\u2014 The officer will ask the U.S. citizenship applicant to write a sentence in English. The <span data-term-id=\"58915467\">USCIS<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915467\"> officer<\/span> could ask the applicant to write anything in English. This could be random sentences or information about <span data-term-id=\"58915471\">American history<\/span>. For example, during the <span data-term-id=\"58915478\">writing test<\/span>, a <span data-term-id=\"58915468\">U.S. citizen<\/span> applicant may be asked to write something like \u201cAbraham Lincoln was the President of the United States.&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A <span data-term-id=\"58915467\">USCIS<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915467\"> officer<\/span> will also ask the applicant to take an <span data-term-id=\"58915500\">oath of allegiance<\/span>, an important requirement by the <span data-term-id=\"58915487\">American government<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2><span data-term-id=\"58915461\">The Civics Test<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The <span data-term-id=\"58915477\">civics portion<\/span> covers basic <span data-term-id=\"58915464\">U.S. history<\/span> and knowledge of government. This test includes having knowledge of <span data-term-id=\"58915464\">U.S. history<\/span> and understanding the <span data-term-id=\"58915492\">U.S. Constitution<\/span>, the branches of the <span data-term-id=\"58915475\">U.S. government<\/span>, elections, voting, and more. These categories ensure you have a foundational understanding of the country you wish to be a citizen of.<\/p>\n<p>Applicants may receive a waiver if they have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that impacts their capacity to understand the relevant information. Applicants living in the U.S. legally for over 20 years and over 65 may also receive special consideration on this test.<\/p>\n<p>Examples of <span data-term-id=\"58915463\">civics questions<\/span> include:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: What are the first 10 amendments to the Constitution called?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: The Bill of Rights.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: In what month is the new President of the United States inaugurated?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: January.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Q: Who elects Congress?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A: The citizens of the United States.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/questions-and-answers\/100q.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-term-id=\"58915460\">USCIS<\/span> posts <span data-term-id=\"58915479\">study materials<\/span><\/a>\u00a0with a list of 100 <span data-term-id=\"58915463\">civics questions<\/span> they might ask during the interview. Note that you will be asked 10 questions and should answer six correctly to pass the <span data-term-id=\"58915477\">civics portion<\/span> of the <span data-term-id=\"58915462\">naturalization test<\/span>. This is the final step of the naturalization ceremony, and you are not a <span data-term-id=\"58915468\">U.S. citizen<\/span> until you take an oath.<\/p>\n<h2>Test Requirement Waivers and Exceptions<\/h2>\n<p>Those with a documented disability may receive a waiver of either or both of the tests, depending on the disability. Also, older <span data-term-id=\"58915472\">permanent residents<\/span> may be eligible to waive or reduce the testing requirements.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Applicants 50 or older who have lived in the U.S. as a <a href=\"http:\/\/permanent%20legal%20resident\/\"><span data-term-id=\"58915472\">permanent resident<\/span><\/a> or a <span data-term-id=\"58915504\">green card<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915504\"> holder<\/span> for 20 years are not subject to the <span data-term-id=\"58915480\">English language<\/span> requirement. Despite this <span data-term-id=\"58915474\">eligibility<\/span> exception, they may still be asked to take the <span data-term-id=\"58915461\">civics test<\/span>.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants 55 or older who have lived in the U.S. as a <span data-term-id=\"58915472\">permanent resident<\/span> or a <span data-term-id=\"58915504\">green card<\/span><span data-term-id=\"58915504\"> holder<\/span> for 15 years are not subject to the <span data-term-id=\"58915480\">English language<\/span> requirement.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants 65 or older who have lived in the U.S. lawfully for 20 years receive special consideration for the civics requirement.<\/li>\n<li>Applicants who are physically unable to read or write may not have to take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/citizenship\/exceptions-and-accommodations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">literacy examination<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The examiner will also ask you some questions about the U.S. system of government and history to confirm that you have basic knowledge of these subjects. Although a perfectly correct answer is unnecessary, you should do your best to achieve the threshold score on the <span data-term-id=\"58915461\">civics test<\/span>. Make sure\u00a0to study to the best of your ability.<\/p>\n<p>The <span data-term-id=\"58915475\">U.S. government<\/span> designs these waivers to simplify the <span data-term-id=\"58915469\">naturalization process<\/span> for long-term American applicants. The <span data-term-id=\"58915461\">civics test<\/span> may also be administered in the applicant&#8217;s native language. The application also has space to<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/citizenship\/exceptions-and-accommodations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0request accommodation<\/a>\u00a0for other disabilities that may impact your application process.<\/p>\n<h2>Can I Retake the Test if I Fail?<\/h2>\n<p>If you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscis.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/guides\/Test_Scoring_Guidelines.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fail one of the <span data-term-id=\"58915462\">naturalization tests<\/span><\/a>, <span data-term-id=\"58915460\">USCIS<\/span> will schedule you a second appointment. This is often 60 to 90 days after the first <span data-term-id=\"58915465\">naturalization interview<\/span>. They will test you again during the second appointment. If you fail one or both of the language and <span data-term-id=\"58915461\">civics tests<\/span>, they will schedule a second appointment, typically within 60 to 90 days of the first interview. During this second interview, they will test you again.<\/p>\n<p>If you fail the test a second time, they will deny your <span data-term-id=\"58915482\">application for naturalization<\/span>. However, this is not the end of your journey. You may apply again.
