Avandia is a type 2 <\/span>diabetes<\/span> drug<\/span> that was heavily marketed as safe, but later linked to serious heart risks, including heart attacks<\/span> and strokes. GlaxoSmithKline<\/span>, the manufacturer, concealed internal studies showing these dangers and faced lawsuits from patients and government entities.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n\n\n\n

Avandia (rosiglitazone<\/span>) is a type\u00a02 <\/span>diabetes<\/span> medication<\/span> manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline<\/span> (GSK<\/span>). Over the years, the drug company marketed the drug as the safest alternative for patients with type\u00a02 diabetes<\/span>. GSK<\/span> also promoted the drug as helping lower cholesterol.<\/p>\n

But there was a problem. Not only was Avandia riskier than other diabetes medications<\/span>, it also carried a high risk of heart problems<\/span>. GKS withheld this information from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration<\/span><\/a> (FDA<\/span>). It also buried in-house studies that showed Avandia increased heart problems<\/span> by a factor of three.<\/p>\n

Many patients filed lawsuits against the drugmaker. So did the federal government and attorneys general from 46 states. As of early 2024, GSK<\/span> has settled all outstanding cases. GSK<\/span> ultimately paid $3 billion to the federal government to settle claims against the drug company. GSK<\/span> also paid more than $3 billion to settle individual lawsuits.<\/p>\n
