Zyprexa is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat schizophrenia and bipolar I disorder, often in combination with other medications. While generally effective, it can cause serious health risks such as neuroleptic malignant syndrome and tardive dyskinesia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Zyprexa is the brand name for olanzapine, which is the drug’s generic name. It’s a second-generation, atypical antipsychotic medication. Doctors use antipsychotic medicines to treat symptoms of schizophrenia<\/a>. This includes hearing voices, seeing things, or sensing things that aren’t there.<\/p>\n

The FDA also approved Zyprexa to treat mixed or manic episodes in adults with\u00a0bipolar I disorder<\/a>. Some patients take it with lithium or valproate for the short-term treatment of acute manic episodes of bipolar disorder.<\/p>\n

Studies have also shown that Zyprexa may help patients with\u00a0breast cancer<\/a>. The drug helps reduce the nausea these patients experience while undergoing treatment.<\/p>\n

Eli Lilly and Company manufactures Zyprexa. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved this medication in 1996<\/a>.<\/p>\n

But Eli Lilly and Company has experienced problems with Zyprexa. The manufacturer has faced government lawsuits and allegations of fatalities involving the drug.<\/p>\n
