Most people know this federal benefits program as OASDI or\u00a0Social Security.<\/p>\n<p>The <span data-term-id=\"57635900\">OASDI program<\/span> receives income from <span data-term-id=\"57635878\">payroll taxes<\/span>. The majority of payouts go to <span data-term-id=\"57635907\">monthly benefits<\/span>. The rest goes to other costs, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/social-security-lump-sum-death-payment-overview.html\">lump-sum death payments<\/a>. The <span data-term-id=\"57635880\">Social Security Administration<\/span> (<span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span>) oversees this system.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s a lot to learn about Social Security. For personalized advice about applying for benefits, you can speak with a <a href=\"https:\/\/lawyers.findlaw.com\/social-security\/?fli=dcta\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-term-id=\"57635884\">Social Security benefits<\/span> lawyer<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>How <span data-term-id=\"57635876\">OASDI Taxes<\/span> Affect Your Paycheck<\/h2>\n<p>You may have noticed a line item on your paystub for an \u201c<span data-term-id=\"57635876\">OASDI tax<\/span>\u201d or \u201c<span data-term-id=\"57635893\">FICA tax<\/span>.\u201d This amount is withheld from <span data-term-id=\"57635927\">employees\u2019 paychecks<\/span> for <span data-term-id=\"57635881\">Social Security taxes<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The <span data-term-id=\"57635876\">OASDI tax<\/span> is mandatory for employees, employers, and the self-employed. <span data-term-id=\"57635914\">Internal Revenue Service<\/span> (<span data-term-id=\"57635891\">IRS<\/span>) statute determines OASI <span data-term-id=\"57635882\">tax rates<\/span>. This <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/tax\/tax-laws-forms\/federal-tax-laws.html\">federal tax<\/a> revenue is transferred to the U.S. Treasury for eventual disbursements.<\/p>\n<h3><span data-term-id=\"57635903\">OASDI <\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635882\">Tax<\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635903\"> Rate<\/span> for Employees and Employers<\/h3>\n<p>An employee contributes to OASDI through <span data-term-id=\"57635878\">payroll taxes<\/span> under the <span data-term-id=\"57635888\">Federal Insurance Contribution Act<\/span> (FICA). An employee pays a mandatory\u00a0FICA\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/OACT\/ProgData\/taxRates.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-term-id=\"57635881\">Social Security tax<\/span><\/a> of 6.2% and a <span data-term-id=\"57635889\">Medicare tax<\/span> of 1.45% for a total of 7.65%. The employer\u2019s share matches the employee\u2019s contribution.<\/p>\n<h3><span data-term-id=\"57635903\">OASDI <\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635882\">Tax<\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635903\"> Rate<\/span> for <span data-term-id=\"57635885\">Self-Employed Individuals<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>People who work for themselves contribute through <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/smallbusiness\/business-taxes\/self-employment-tax.html\"><span data-term-id=\"57635913\">self-employment taxes<\/span><\/a> under the <span data-term-id=\"57635911\">Self-Employment Contributions Act<\/span> (<span data-term-id=\"57635905\">SECA<\/span>). The <span data-term-id=\"57635905\">SECA<\/span> <span data-term-id=\"57635882\">tax rate<\/span> is 15.3% in 2026.<\/p>\n<p><span data-term-id=\"57635908\">Self-employed workers<\/span> pay a rate twice as high as regular employees because they must pay the total tax for both employees and employers under <span data-term-id=\"57635905\">SECA<\/span>. <span data-term-id=\"57635917\">Self-employed people<\/span> receive a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/tax\/federal-taxes\/tax-exemptions.html\"><span data-term-id=\"57635895\">tax deduction<\/span><\/a> in exchange for the higher <span data-term-id=\"57635933\">federal income <\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635882\">tax<\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635882\"> rate<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h3>The <span data-term-id=\"57635897\">Wage Base<\/span> Cap on Taxable Income<\/h3>\n<p>The federal government places a\u00a0ceiling on earnings\u00a0subject to OASDI taxation. The OASDI ceiling in 2026 is $184,500. The tax will apply to earnings up to that maximum amount. Additional earnings above this amount are not taxable for OASDI.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.findlaw.com\/definition\/taxable-income.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-term-id=\"57635926\">taxable maximum<\/span><\/a> amount fluctuates. The <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> uses the national average wage index to calculate the cap. If workers\u2019 wages increase on average, the <span data-term-id=\"57635926\">taxable maximum<\/span> amount rises as well.<\/p>\n<h3>Who Is Exempt from <span data-term-id=\"57635881\">Social Security Taxes<\/span>?<\/h3>\n<p>Members of certain groups receive an exemption from paying <span data-term-id=\"57635881\">Social Security taxes<\/span>. This includes members of religious groups, including the Amish and Mennonites. These individuals must apply for an exemption through the <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>Nonresident immigrants are generally liable for OASDI and <span data-term-id=\"57635889\">Medicare taxes<\/span>. Yet, a few exceptions exist for workers with certain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/immigration\/visas.html\">types of visas and employment<\/a>. These visas mainly cover students, scholars, and <span data-term-id=\"57635935\">foreign <\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635904\">government<\/span><span data-term-id=\"57635904\"> employees<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2>OASDI Cost-of-Living Adjustments<\/h2>\n<p>As daily expenses rise due to inflation, the <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> may need to raise its payments to Social Security <span data-term-id=\"57635931\">beneficiaries<\/span>. Once per year, the law requires the <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> to recalculate <span data-term-id=\"57635906\">OASDI benefits<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p>The <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> uses the annual consumer price index to decide this change. If the index shows higher prices that year, the <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> will issue a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA). Without an increase, there is no COLA.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a recipient of OASDI, the COLA can affect the amount of your <span data-term-id=\"57635907\">monthly benefits<\/span>. For example, if the <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> issues a 3% COLA, a $2,000 <span data-term-id=\"57635907\">monthly benefit<\/span> would become $2,060 instead. The actual COLA percentage varies each year.<\/p>\n<p>The COLA does not directly impact <span data-term-id=\"57635876\">OASDI taxes<\/span>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/the-social-security-act-overview.html\">Social Security law<\/a> sets the <span data-term-id=\"57635882\">tax rate<\/span>. The <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span> also adjusts the taxable income limit separately from the COLA each year.<\/p>\n<h2>How To Earn Social Security Credits<\/h2>\n<p>When you work and pay into the system, you earn up to four quarters of coverage, or\u00a0credits, per year. Credits are based on an <span data-term-id=\"57635934\">employee\u2019s wages<\/span> or self-employment income during the year. Employers report their employees\u2019 earnings once a calendar year.<\/p>\n<p>You may work year-round to earn four credits or enough for all four credits in a shorter time. In 2026, a worker must earn\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/retire2\/credits1.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$1,890 to receive one credit<\/a>\u00a0and $7,560 to receive the maximum four credits for the year.<\/p>\n<p>You can check how many credits you have through the <span data-term-id=\"57635892\">SSA<\/span>\u2019s website or your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/understanding-your-social-security-benefit-statement.html\">Social Security statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>How Work Credits Affect OASDI <span data-term-id=\"57635894\">Eligibility<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>You need enough Social Security credits to meet <span data-term-id=\"57635894\">eligibility<\/span> requirements for <span data-term-id=\"57635884\">Social Security benefits<\/span>. The number of credits you need for program <span data-term-id=\"57635894\">eligibility<\/span> depends on the type of benefit as follows:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Social Security <span data-term-id=\"57635902\">retirement benefits<\/span>: <\/strong>If you were born in 1929 or later, you\u2019d need 40 credits or 10 years of work for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/applying-for-social-security-benefits.html\"><span data-term-id=\"57635902\">retirement benefit<\/span> <span data-term-id=\"57635894\">eligibility<\/span><\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-term-id=\"57635890\">Disability benefits<\/span>:<\/strong> You will need between 20 to 40 credits for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/disability.html\">Social Security <span data-term-id=\"57635877\">Disability Insurance<\/span> (SSDI)<\/a>, depending on your age when your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/disability\/what-is-my-disability-onset-date.html\">disability begins<\/a>. For example, a person 31 or older must have at least 20 work credits in the decade before the disability began.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span data-term-id=\"57635887\">Survivors benefits<\/span>: <\/strong>The number of credits needed to provide\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/social-security-survivor-benefits-overview.html\"><span data-term-id=\"57635887\">survivors benefits<\/span>\u00a0to <span data-term-id=\"57635916\">family members<\/span><\/a> depends on the <span data-term-id=\"57635901\">deceased worker<\/span>\u2019s age. Some people can get benefits if the earner has just six credits in the three years before death.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Credits are not needed for\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/disability\/what-is-the-difference-between-ssdi-and-ssi.html\"><span data-term-id=\"57635920\">Supplemental Security Income<\/span> (<span data-term-id=\"57635938\">SSI<\/span>)<\/a>\u00a0<span data-term-id=\"57635894\">eligibility<\/span>. Instead, the <span data-term-id=\"57635938\">SSI<\/span> program is for a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/disability\/how-is-social-security-disability-defined.html\">disabled adult or child<\/a> with low income and resources. <span data-term-id=\"57635938\">SSI<\/span> benefits come out of the\u00a0<span data-term-id=\"57635877\">Disability Insurance<\/span> <span data-term-id=\"57635898\">Trust Fund<\/span>\u00a0(DI <span data-term-id=\"57635898\">trust fund<\/span>). They are held in an account separate from the <span data-term-id=\"57635879\">Old-Age<\/span> and Survivors Insurance <span data-term-id=\"57635898\">Trust Fund<\/span> (OASI).<\/p>\n<h2>OASDI for <span data-term-id=\"57635918\">Retired Workers<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Many people don\u2019t <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/tips-on-filing-for-social-security-benefits.html\">claim any <span data-term-id=\"57635884\">Social Security benefits<\/span><\/a> until they retire. At that point, OASDI <span data-term-id=\"57635937\">insured workers<\/span> can receive <span data-term-id=\"57635915\">financial support<\/span> based on their retirement age and income history.<\/p>\n<p>During your life, you\u2019ll likely earn more credits than the minimum number needed for <span data-term-id=\"57635894\">eligibility<\/span>. The extra credits you earn don\u2019t increase your <span data-term-id=\"57635896\">benefit amount<\/span>. Instead, your <span data-term-id=\"57635907\">monthly benefit<\/span> is determined by your\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssa.gov\/OACT\/COLA\/Benefits.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">average indexed monthly earnings (AIME)<\/a>\u00a0over your working years.<\/p>\n<p><span data-term-id=\"57635902\">Retirement benefits<\/span> also depend on your age at retirement. You\u2019ll receive your full benefit at\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/socialsecurity\/basics\/when-should-you-start-claiming-social-security-benefits.html\"><span data-term-id=\"57635919\">full retirement age<\/span><\/a> (FRA).<\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll receive a\u00a0reduced benefit\u00a0if you begin receiving benefits before your FRA. You may choose early retirement as early as 62, but doing so may reduce benefits by up to 30%.\u00a0Spousal benefits\u00a0may also be reduced. On the other hand, you\u2019ll receive your largest benefit by delaying retirement until age 70.
