This advantage can add up to tremendous savings in the long term.<\/p>\n<h3>What are 401(k) plans?<\/h3>\n<p>401(k)s are the most well-known and popular qualified <span data-term-id=\"56976615\">retirement plan<\/span>. 401(k)s derive their name from the relevant tax code (section 401, subsection k), and were designed to encourage people to save for their retirements.<\/p>\n<p>401(k)s are popular with employers because the majority (or all) of the contribution comes from the employee. Traditional plans are expensive, so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/employment\/wages-and-benefits\/a-look-at-401-k-plans-for-employees.html\">using a 401(k)<\/a> allows an employer to still provide a retirement option at a much lower cost.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Matched&#8221; 401(k)s are <span data-term-id=\"56976620\">retirement accounts<\/span> where an employer agrees to match the employee contribution up to a set amount. For example, if the employee contributes $1,000, then the employer also contributes $1,000.<\/p>\n<p>Employees like 401(k)s because the contributions they make from their salary aren\u2019t subject to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/state\/tax-laws\/personal-income-tax.html\"><span data-term-id=\"56976637\">income tax<\/span><\/a>. Imagine an employee who makes $50,000 per year. If they contribute $5,000 in a tax year to their 401(k), their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/tax\/federal-taxes\/ten-ways-to-lower-your-taxes.html\">taxable income<\/a> will only be $45,000. They are a &#8220;qualified&#8221; plan like a 401(k), and since you are self-employed, you the employer are setting it up. They function somewhat like a 401(k), but are generally more limited in terms of the contributions the individual can make. If you are 50% vested, then you can only take 50% of the benefit. In terms of a <span data-term-id=\"56976620\">retirement account<\/span>, if you are only 50% vested in your account when you leave the company, then you can only take 50% of it when you go.<\/p>\n<h3>Can creditors claim money from my <span data-term-id=\"56976620\">retirement accounts<\/span>?<\/h3>\n<p>It depends on which type of <span data-term-id=\"56976620\">retirement account<\/span> you have. Many plans, including most &#8220;qualified&#8221; plans, are exempt from creditors under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/employment\/wages-and-benefits\/what-is-erisa.html\">Employee <span data-term-id=\"56976617\">Retirement Income<\/span> Security Act<\/a> (ERISA) and are also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/bankruptcy\/what-is-bankruptcy\/is-your-401-k-or-ira-protected-in-bankruptcy.html\">protected in bankruptcy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>IRAs (of any variety) and Keogh plans are not necessarily protected and are not covered by ERISA. Many states, however, protect some of these plans or limit creditors\u2019 access to these plans, so check to see whether your state offers any protection.<\/p>\n<h3>Can I have multiple <span data-term-id=\"56976620\">retirement accounts<\/span> if I work for a company but also own my own business?<\/h3>\n<p>Yes, you can, but there are overall contribution limits. If you are contributing to your 401(k), it may reduce how much you can contribute to your own business <span data-term-id=\"56976620\">retirement account<\/span>. You have to coordinate the accounts to comply with contribution limits.<\/p>\n<h2>When Should I Retire?<\/h2>\n<p>The best <span data-term-id=\"56976640\">retirement age<\/span> will depend on your unique circumstances.
