The District of Columbia has homicide laws just like every other jurisdiction in the United States. Like most other states, D.C. law recognizes several types of homicide<\/a>, including murder and manslaughter.<\/blockquote>\r\n

This differs from manslaughter cases, which tend to involve defendants who acted in the heat of passion or were responding to adequate provocation. The District of Columbia Law Definition of Manslaughter<\/b><\/h2>\r\n

Washington, D.C. law recognizes two types of manslaughter: voluntary and involuntary manslaughter. Involuntary manslaughter<\/a> occurs when someone dies while the defendant commits an unlawful act that generally would not result in great bodily harm or death.<\/p>\r\n

The other type of manslaughter – voluntary manslaughter – involves a defendant who kills someone impulsively or in response to provocation. D.C. law defines voluntary manslaughter as the intentional killing of another person without planning or malice aforethought. This crime of violence also includes a defendant who kills another human being during the heat of passion.<\/p>\r\n

A typical example of voluntary manslaughter is a person who comes home to find their partner in bed with someone else. In the heat of passion, they may kill the other party, their spouse, or both. As long as a reasonable person<\/a> would agree that the defendant acted impulsively and without planning, the defendant will likely avoid a murder charge.<\/p>\r\n

State Requirements for Obtaining a Voluntary Manslaughter Conviction<\/b><\/h2>\r\n

For the state to convict a defendant of voluntary manslaughter, it must prove culpability beyond a reasonable doubt. This is true for any criminal case, but criminal offenses involving the death of another human being are much more severe than lesser felonies and misdemeanors<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n
