Any of these will qualify:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The value of the <span data-term-id=\"42023129\">stolen <\/span><span data-term-id=\"42023107\">motor vehicle<\/span> is $100,000 or more<\/li>\n<li>The property stolen is cargo valued at $50,000 or more that has entered interstate or intrastate commerce<\/li>\n<li>During the <span data-term-id=\"42023108\">grand theft<\/span>, the offender either used a <span data-term-id=\"42023107\">motor vehicle<\/span> as a tool to assist in the commission of the offense and it caused damage to the real property of another, or it caused damage to real or <span data-term-id=\"42023120\">personal property<\/span> exceeding $1,000<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A person who used a truck to ram through a gate to steal equipment could face first-degree <span data-term-id=\"42023113\">grand theft<\/span><span data-term-id=\"42023113\"> auto<\/span> charges if the damage caused exceeds $1,000. <span data-term-id=\"42023111\">First-degree felony<\/span> penalties include up to 30 years in prison and fines of up to $10,000.<\/p>\n<h2><span data-term-id=\"42023125\">Joyriding<\/span> vs. Stealing<\/h2>\n<p>In some states, taking someone&#8217;s car for a <span data-term-id=\"42023125\">joyride<\/span> with the intent to return it is charged as a lesser offense than <span data-term-id=\"42023113\">grand theft<\/span><span data-term-id=\"42023113\"> auto<\/span>. <span data-term-id=\"42023105\">Florida<\/span> is not one of those jurisdictions.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/codes.findlaw.com\/fl\/title-xlvi-crimes\/fl-st-sect-812-014\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span data-term-id=\"42023114\">Florida<\/span><span data-term-id=\"42023114\"> statutes<\/span><\/a> classify theft as when you take someone&#8217;s property with the intent to deprive the owner of it, either temporarily or permanently. &#8220;Borrowing&#8221; someone else\u2019s car without permission carries the same felony charges as stealing the car.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors must prove that you took or used the car with the intent to deprive the owner of their rights to it.
