Most federal education laws<\/span> focus on broad matters such as civil rights<\/span> and free speech<\/a>. Education is primarily governed by state law<\/span>. In Illinois<\/span>, the board of education appoints a state <\/span>superintendent<\/span>. This official implements academic standards. They also oversee compliance with education laws<\/span><\/a>. From Chicago<\/span> to Springfield<\/span>, regional offices of education<\/span> support these goals.<\/p>\n

The Illinois<\/span> General Assembly<\/span><\/a> frequently updates education laws<\/span> to match evolving needs. In 2023, for example, it expanded health education<\/span> mandates to include guidance for accessing mental health<\/span> resources. Governor Pritzker signed the first bill of its kind<\/a> in 2025, requiring public schools<\/span> to offer mental health<\/span> screenings for students in grades three through 12.
