The state also takes great pride in its workforce and therefore requires employers to purchase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/injury\/workers-compensation\/workers-comp-benefits-explained.html\" target=\"_blank\">workers&#8217; compensation insurance<\/a>, which covers work-related injuries and illnesses regardless of fault. Compensation?<\/h2>\r\n<p>In Iowa, most employees injured in the state are eligible for benefits. Even if they are injured outside of the state, workers may still receive compensation if they were hired in Iowa or their employment is principally located in Iowa. Some types of workers &#8212; such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/employment\/hiring-process\/being-an-independent-contractor-vs-employee.html\" target=\"_blank\">independent contractors<\/a> and domestic workers making less than $1,500 per year &#8212; are not automatically covered.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Injured? See a Doctor and Tell Your Employer<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you&#8217;re sick or injured, you should get medical attention and tell your employer or supervisor as soon as possible. If you don&#8217;t give notice to your employer within 90 days, you risk losing your benefits altogether. Your employer then has four days to submit a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iowaworkcomp.gov\/sites\/authoring.iowadivisionofworkcomp.gov\/files\/First%20Report%20of%20Injury%2014-0001%20May%202015.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">first report of injury or illness<\/a> to the Workers&#8217; Compensation Commissioner. Additionally, your employer has the right to choose your medical provider, although you may file a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iowaworkcomp.gov\/sites\/authoring.iowadivisionofworkcomp.gov\/files\/14-0011altcarefillable.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">petition for alternate care<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What Should I Do if There&#8217;s a Problem with My Claim?<\/h2>\r\n<p>In exchange for workers&#8217; compensation, you generally give up your right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/injury\/workers-compensation\/workers-compensation-can-i-sue-my-employer-instead.html\" target=\"_blank\">sue your employer<\/a>.
