Baltimore. It\u2019s a city and an entirely separate county. Baltimore City<\/a> was founded in 1729.  It\u2019s the second largest seaport in the Mid-Atlantic. \u201cCharm City,\u201d as it\u2019s known, is notable for many things — Babe Ruth<\/a>, Edgar Allen Poe<\/a>, the Star-Spangled Banner<\/a>, crab houses, and world-class universities.<\/p>\r\n

It\u2019s a bustling and diverse city with over 225 different neighborhoods. Boasting a population of over 620,000 \u201cBaltimoreans,\u201d it\u2019s the most populous city in Maryland.<\/p>\r\n

Baltimore County<\/a>  has been around since 1659 and is a suburban district in Maryland with numerous collections of towns and unincorporated municipalities. The county seat is in Towson.<\/p>\r\n

Here we\u2019ve highlighted several key court systems you\u2019ll most likely encounter in the Baltimore metropolitan area including for Baltimore City: the Circuit, District and Orphans\u2019 courts.<\/a> For Baltimore County: the Circuit, District and Orphans’ Court.<\/a><\/p>\r\n

Finally, the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland<\/a>, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Maryland<\/a>, the Baltimore Immigration Court,<\/a> and the Maryland Tax Court. <\/a> <\/p>\r\n

    Parking<\/u>: There are several lots on Guilford Avenue, St. Paul Place, and South Calvert Street. Consider taking MTA<\/a> public transportation.<\/p>\n

    Note<\/u>: The Circuit Court is responsible for hearing all major felony cases  and misdemeanor jury trials. All civil claims are heard in this court exclusively involving disputes over $20,000 and  in addition to all family law matters including divorce, custody, child support and\/or visitation.     Parking<\/u>: Consider taking MTA<\/a>. Buses numbers 27, 58, 59 and 60 have bus stops near by. The Metro Subway Reisterstown Plaza Station is on Wabash Ave.<\/p>\n

    Note<\/u>: The District Court is responsible for all traffic matters, civil matters under $10,000 (including small claims disputes) and all criminal misdemeanor cases. The building also houses satellite offices for the public defender<\/a> and the state’s attorney<\/a> for Baltimore City. Hungry?     Parking<\/u>: There are several pay lots in the area. Consider taking MTA<\/a>. Buses numbers 5, 6, 8, 19, 20, 36, 150, 160, 310have bus stops near by. The Metro Subway Shot Tower Station is located on East Baltimore Street and from there you can transfer to MTA bus 20 to the Courthouse.<\/p>\n

    Note<\/u>: All minor civil matters including landlord tenant disputes, housing violations and minor civil suits are handled here.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n \n \n \n \n \n <\/span>\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n

    Parking<\/u>: There is a pay lot adjacent to the building. From downtown use MTA<\/a> bus 19; from East Baltimore, use MTA<\/a> bus 13.<\/p>\n

    Note<\/u>: Don\u2019t let the exterior of the building fool you. It might look like a Sears Department store (it was!), it\u2019s actually the courthouse. <\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n \n \n \n \n \n <\/span>\n <\/span>\n <\/li>\n

    Note<\/u>: This is largely a correctional intake facility run by the state of Maryland. Judges assigned here usually hold hearings involving persons recently arrested for crimes and who are being held, pre-trial, in lieu of a certain dollar amount bail.     Parking<\/u>: The entrance to the courthouse is on West Lombard Street. There are parking facilities on all the surrounding streets. The courthouse is located in the central business district and easily accessible from several highway exits. Consider taking MTA<\/a>.<\/p>\n

All application fees are paid to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) office located on the 1st floor of the Fallon Federal Building.
