Fines for speeding in these areas are also higher.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Drunk Driving in Michigan<\/h2>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/state\/michigan-law\/michigan-dui-laws.html\">Driving under the influence&nbsp;<\/a>of alcohol or drugs is a serious crime in Michigan. The penalties for a first-time&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/dui\/charges\/dui-offense-basics.html\">Operating While Intoxicated (OWI)<\/a>&nbsp;offense include a $500 fine and up to 93 days in jail. Penalties are steeper for repeat offenses and for a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/dui\/arrests\/bac-test-faqs.html\">blood alcohol content (BAC)<\/a>&nbsp;of .17 or higher.<\/p>\r\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.michigan.gov\/msp\/divisions\/ohsp\/safety-programs\/impaired-driving\/impaired-driving-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Michigan law<\/a>&nbsp;uses varying blood alcohol content (BAC) levels within their impaired driving laws:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>.08 for motorists 21+<\/li>\r\n<li>.02 and up for motorists under 21<\/li>\r\n<li>.04 for commercial drivers<\/li>\r\n<li>.17 incurs steeper penalties due to Michigan&#8217;s high-BAC law<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>First and second drunk driving offenses are misdemeanors. Third and subsequent offenses (within seven years of a prior conviction) are felonies.<\/p>\r\n<p>The consequences are even more severe if you are driving under the influence and involved in a car accident. If the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(wbeeiob2oiuidpprfnhweizl))\/mileg.aspx?page=getObject&amp;objectName=mcl-257-625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">accident results in serious impairment of a body function or death<\/a>, you could be guilty of a felony punishable by up to five years in prison and a&nbsp;fine&nbsp;of up to $5,000.<\/p>\r\n<p>If a drunk driving accident in Michigan results in death, you could be guilty of&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges\/involuntary-manslaughter-overview.html\">vehicular manslaughter<\/a>. The penalties for this crime include up to 15 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.legislature.mi.gov\/(S(g244djdmlfb3ir3cen2soj5a))\/mileg.aspx?page=GetObject&amp;objectname=mcl-257-625\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">You could face even more prison time<\/a>&nbsp;if you were driving with a BAC of .17% or higher.<\/p>\r\n<table>\r\n<tbody><tr><th scope=\"row\" style=\"text-align: left;\"><p>Drinking &amp;
