Therefore, the state requires employers to purchase <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/injury\/workers-compensation\/workers-comp-benefits-explained.html\" target=\"_blank\">workers&#8217; compensation insurance<\/a>, which covers work-related injuries and illnesses regardless of fault. And most people who perform paid services for another are considered employees &#8212; even minors and non-citizens &#8212; though some types of workers are not automatically covered, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dli.mn.gov\/business\/workers-compensation\/work-comp-independent-contractor-or-employee\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">independent contractors<\/a>. Lastly, injuries that are caused, aggravated, or accelerated by employment activities are covered by workers&#8217; compensation insurance.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Sick or Injured? See a Doctor and Tell Your Employer<\/h2>\r\n<p>If you&#8217;re sick or hurt, you should get medical attention and tell your supervisor within 14 days of the injury or illness. You risk losing your benefits altogether if you don&#8217;t give notice to your employer within 180 days and give good reason for the delay. After you&#8217;ve missed three days of work, your employer then has 10 days to submit a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dli.mn.gov\/business\/workers-compensation\/work-comp-first-report-injury-froi-form-information\" target=\"_blank\" adhocenable=\"false\" rel=\"noopener\">first report of injury or illness<\/a> to their insurance company who must either deny your claim or begin making payments.<\/p>\r\n<h2>What if There&#8217;s a Problem with My Claim?<\/h2>\r\n<p>In exchange for workers&#8217; compensation, you generally give up your right to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/injury\/workers-compensation\/workers-compensation-can-i-sue-my-employer-instead.html\" target=\"_blank\">sue your employer<\/a>. However, if your claim is denied or there is a dispute regarding benefits, you do have options, including the following:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Call the insurance claims adjuster and attempt to resolve the issue with them;<\/li>\r\n<li>Discuss the problem with an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dli.mn.gov\/workers\/workers-compensation\/work-comp-alternative-dispute-resolution-services\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Alternative Dispute Resolution<\/a> specialist at the Department of Labor and Industry; or<\/li>\r\n<li>Request a hearing by filing an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dli.mn.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/pdf\/ec04.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Employee&#8217;s Claim Petition<\/a> form (many employees choose to have an attorney help with preparing documents, meeting deadlines, and arguing their case during these proceedings)<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Injured and Overwhelmed?
