What is Asbestos and Why is it Regulated?<\/h2>\r\n

Early on, asbestos was thought to be a harmless, naturally occurring mineral fiber with a number of amazing properties for building and otherwise. Some of these properties include being fire and heat resistant. Yet, as we now know, asbestos is not as harmless as it seems. In fact, when it becomes airborne, it can be deadly to humans. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service has classified asbestos as a human carcinogen 404<\/span><\/a> causing numerous health problems such as lung cancer and mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

Asbestos is regulated in many different areas, most notably in demolition of certain dwellings or structures and in the workplace (such as in the maritime, construction, manufacturing, and service industries). A prominent case of work-related asbestos exposure occurred during the rescue, recovery, and cleanup of the World Trade Center (WTC) in New York City after the September 11th<\/sup> attacks on the United States. Workers in these areas are at risk of developing an asbestos-related disease, according to studies<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources 404<\/span><\/a> must be notified about all projects in regulated buildings where the structure is:

  • 260 linear feet, or<\/li>\r\n
  • 35 cubic feet<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
