Hackensack — It’s a bus, train, or ferry ride away from Manhattan, but without all the noise and pollution. Bergen County is the most populous in the state of New Jersey with over 900,000 residents living in over 60 boroughs and towns, including the county seat of Hackensack. It’s part of the larger New York Metropolitan area including other nearby counties such as Passaic.<\/p>\n

    Civil Part:<\/b> This court handles civil cases involving parties seeking money damages. Examples of cases that are filed here include auto negligence cases, medical malpractice cases, discrimination cases, products liability cases, as well as a variety of other suits in which money damages are sought.<\/p>\n

    Special Civil Part:<\/b> This court handles landlord tenant matters, civil claims for money damages between $3,001- $15,000 including contract cases, motor vehicle accident cases, damage or loss of property cases, non-payment for work performed, and small claims (up to $3,000).<\/p>\n

    Note: The Chancery Division-General Equity courts hear cases that seek \u201cequitable relief,\u201d rather than money compensation. Equitable relief usually involves the court compelling or restricting actions of one of the parties (such as labor injunctions, foreclosures, dissolution of a corporation or partnership, execution of wills and distribution of estates).<\/p>\n

    The Probate courts hear cases involving the following matters: execution of wills, distribution of estates, guardianship proceedings involving protection of infants or persons with mental incompetence, completion of gifts according to the donor\u2019s intent.<\/p>\n
