In New Jersey, a person commits <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges\/forgery.html\" target=\"_blank\">forgery<\/a> if they have the intent to defraud or injure another and commit the following actions:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Change any writing of another without writer&#8217;s authorization;<\/li>\n<li>Make, authenticate, or transfer any writing so that it purports to be that act of another (who didn&#8217;t authorize that act) or of a fictitious person; or<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.findlaw.com\/definition\/utter.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Utter<\/a> any writing with the knowledge that the writing is forged.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>New Jersey <i>Writing<\/i> Definition<\/h2>\n<p>Under New Jersey law, &quot;writing&quot; refers to money, credit cards, badges, access devices and other symbols of value including sales receipts, Universal Product Code (UPC) labels, and checks.<\/p>\n<h2>Counterfeiting in New Jersey<\/h2>\n<p>The offense of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges\/counterfeiting.html\" target=\"_blank\">counterfeiting<\/a> is considered a type of forgery since it pertains to creating a false version of something and attempting to pass it off as legitimate. Many of the more serious offenses involve currency, but the counterfeiting of other entities such as securities or retail merchandise and other <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/consumer\/consumer-transactions\/buying-counterfeit-goods-laws-and-resources.html\" target=\"_blank\">goods<\/a> are also serious offenses.
