Just as states have regulations on marriage, they have them for divorce. Each state has legal requirements for divorce<\/a>. State laws and court rules outline the procedures a person must follow to get divorced<\/a>.<\/p>\r\n

In New York, divorce laws allow you to file your case on fault or no-fault grounds<\/a>. To be eligible to file in New York, you must show that you meet the residency rule. In some states, a married couple must separate for some time before divorce. You do not have to wait in New York to file your case.<\/p>\r\n

Before the 1970s, a spouse filing for divorce had to show fault; some conduct by the other spouse supported ending the marriage.
