Parents want to keep their children and information about them safe. When it comes to school records, both federal and state laws exist to protect students\u2019 privacy. The two main privacy of school records federal laws are the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act<\/a> (FERPA) and the Protection of Pupil Rights Amendment<\/a> (PPRA).<\/p>\n

Federal Laws on School Record Privacy<\/h2>\n

FERPA dictates how schools handle parent or guardian requests for their child\u2019s education<\/a> records or amendments to them if they’re inaccurate. Schools can\u2019t release educational records without the written consent of the parent. To release personally identifiable educational records<\/a>, the school must provide the parent or guardian the following information:<\/p>\n

  1. Records that\u2019ll be released<\/li>\n
  2. Reason for release<\/li>\n
  3. Organization or person requesting the school records<\/li>\n
  4. How they\u2019ll be released (electronic, paper)<\/li>\n
  5. That parents have a right to review or receive a copy of those records<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    PPRA protects student rights<\/a> by having schools allow parents to inspection any instructional materials, as well as surveys, or evaluations that students could be asked to participate in. Also, PPRA requires schools have written parental consent before students participate in surveys or evaluations.
