Declaring bankruptcy is a sad time in many people\u2019s lives. Fortunately, going bankrupt doesn\u2019t mean you have to lose everything. If you own and live in a home, you can claim it as your \u201chomestead.\u201d States create homestead laws to limit the value and size of land you can claim as exempt from a bankruptcy or other court judgments.<\/p>\r\n

However, there are circumstances where the homestead exemption won\u2019t help you. For example, in Oregon, the homestead exemption won\u2019t help you with the following debts:<\/p>\r\n
