Family courts in Rhode Island issue child support<\/a> awards because it is the responsibility of both parents to provide financially for their children. There are two parents in every child support case, the "custodial parent" and the "non-custodial parent." The custodial parent lives with the child and bears the primary day-to-day responsibility for childcare. The custodial parent is entitled to receive child support payments from the non-custodial parent. The non-custodial parent may have visitation or joint custody of the child and is obligated to pay child support.<\/p>\n

The court issues child support awards based on the state’s child support guidelines<\/a>, unless the court finds that the resulting order would be inequitable to the child or either parent. The court considers the following factors when determining whether or not to deviate from the support guidelines:<\/p>\n
