You need <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dps.texas.gov\/section\/driver-license\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>a driver&#8217;s license<\/u><\/a>, and your <a href=\"https:\/\/codes.findlaw.com\/tx\/transportation-code\/transp-sect-502-040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>vehicle must be registered<\/u><\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.txdot.gov\/safety\/driving-laws\/texting-cellphone-laws.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>Don&#8217;t read or send texts<\/u><\/a> on your phone while driving. Other laws are specific to Texas, and it&#8217;s important to know them.<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Texas Mandatory Liability Auto Insurance<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p>To be a legal driver in Texas, you must carry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdi.texas.gov\/pubs\/consumer\/cb020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>liability auto insurance<\/u><\/a>. This means that if you&#8217;re at fault in an accident, your car insurance policy will cover the damages of the other drivers. The minimum coverage you can have is:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>$30,000 injury coverage per person<\/li>\r\n<li>$60,000 injury coverage per accident<\/li>\r\n<li>$25,000 property damage coverage<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Texas calls this 30\/60\/25 coverage. While this is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tdi.texas.gov\/pubs\/consumer\/cb020.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">required minimum of coverage<\/a>, the state encourages drivers to opt for higher coverage. If you&#8217;re at fault for damages that exceed your insurance coverage, you&#8217;ll have to pay the rest out of pocket.<\/p>\r\n<p>All Texas auto insurance policies include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/p\/personal-injury-protection-pip.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">personal injury protection (PIP) coverage<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/u\/uninsured-motorist-coverage-um.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uninsured\/underinsured coverage<\/a> unless you opt out of the coverage. You must opt out in writing.<\/p>\r\n<p>You must produce proof of car insurance on demand. Other types of auto insurance available include <a href=\"https:\/\/dictionary.findlaw.com\/definition\/comprehensive-insurance.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><u>comprehensive insurance<\/u><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/injury\/car-accidents\/what-is-collision-insurance.html\"><u>collision insurance<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Negligence and Fault in Texas<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p>Your car is a mess after the accident. You have collision insurance, but the other driver hit you. Who pays?<\/p>\r\n<p>Texas is an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/injury\/accident-injury-law\/accident-fault-faq.html\">at-fault state<\/a>, which means that the driver who gets the majority of the blame for the accident is liable to pay for the damages caused. Most often, their insurance policy handles this.
