Luckily, Vermont has a number of laws governing the rental process, in addition to federal and local laws. Read on to learn more about Vermont&#8217;s tenant rights laws.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Tenant Rights: Repairs, Security Deposits, and More<\/h2>\r\n<p>Vermont law <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/realestate\/landlord-tenant-law\/tenants-and-fair-housing.html\" target=\"_blank\">protects you against discrimination<\/a> based on race, sexual orientation, and disability, among other protected characteristics. And once your tenancy begins, your landlord must maintain the premises in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/realestate\/landlord-tenant-law\/what-is-the-implied-warranty-of-habitability.html\" target=\"_blank\">habitable condition<\/a> such that they are safe, clean, and comply with building, housing, and health regulations. If your landlord fails to make repairs necessary for health and safety within a reasonable time, you may be able to withhold rent temporarily or even terminate the rental agreement.<\/p>\r\n<p>Another common area of tension involves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/realestate\/landlord-tenant-law\/security-deposits.html\" target=\"_blank\">security deposits<\/a>. In Vermont, a landlord can keep part of your security deposit for things like unpaid rent and damage beyond normal wear and tear. In any case, your landlord must return your security deposit to you, along with an itemized list of deductions, within 14 days after you move out of the unit. If they fail to do so, they may forfeit their right to retain any portion of security deposit.<\/p>\r\n<p>These and other laws are designed to protect you within the landlord-tenant relationship.
