What&#39;s even more unfortunate is when the fires are a result of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges\/arson.html\" target=\"_blank\">arson<\/a>. Arson is a very serious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges\/property-crimes.html\" target=\"_blank\">property crime<\/a> which not only results in the destruction of property, but can also end with injury and the loss of life. Due to the high stakes of the crime, state laws that criminalize arson provide strict penalties. Virginia law is in accordance with this practice.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Arson Offenses in Virginia<\/h2>\r\n<p>Virginia divides arson offenses into various categories. In addition to crimes that involve the actual arsonist, the law also contains provisions for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/criminal\/criminal-charges\/aiding-and-abetting-accessory.html\" target=\"_blank\">aiding and abetting<\/a>.This means that you even if you didn&#39;t strike a match or enter the scene of the crime, you can be punished to the same extent as the actual arsonist because you encouraged or assisted with the arson.<\/p>\r\n<p>Arson offenses include the following:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Burning of a <i>dwelling house<\/i><\/li>\r\n<li>Burning or destruction of a <i>meeting house<\/i><\/li>\r\n<li>Burning or destruction of a <i>structure<\/i><\/li>\r\n<li>Burning of <i>personal property<\/i><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<h2>Virginia Arson Laws at a Glance<\/h2>\r\n<p>It&#39;s critical to understand every word of a statute especially when it concerns criminal charges. However, it&#39;s also helpful to get a general sense of what the statute conveys from a plain language version of the content. Unoccupied: punishable by 2-10 years in prison and\/or a fine up to $100,000.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>Malicious burning of other structures<\/b> (structures not covered in the other statutes):<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li><i>Penalty<\/i>: Occupied building: 5-20 years in prison and\/or a fine up to $100,000.
