In Washington state, both parents are responsible for supporting their child until the child turns 18 or graduates from high school, whichever occurs later. This obligation is formalized in a child support order,<\/a> which specifies the amount of child support that the noncustodial parent (the obligor) must pay to the custodial parent (the obligee) to help cover the expenses of raising the child.<\/p>\r\n

The amount of child support is calculated using the state’s child support schedule. This schedule outlines the basic support obligation based on the parents’ combined income and the number of children.<\/p>\r\n

The child support schedule ensures fairness by determining how much each parent pays, proportionate to their income. The Department of Social and Health Services (DSHS), through the Division of Child Support (DCS)<\/a>, assists in enforcing and managing child support obligations to ensure compliance with the order.<\/p>\r\n
