It can also be overwhelming and confusing for expanding families.<\/p>\r\n<p>Wisconsin state law defines the legal regulations for adoption. This includes who is allowed to adopt and the requirements for adoptive parents. Specifically, Wisconsin adoption statutes state:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Who can adopt<\/li>\r\n<li>Who can be adopted<\/li>\r\n<li>Other aspects regarding the legal process for adoption<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>This article provides a brief overview of adoption laws in the state of Wisconsin.<\/p>\r\n<h2><b>Legal Requirements for Wisconsin Adoptions<\/b><\/h2>\r\n<p>Wisconsin Statutes Social Services, <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.legis.wisconsin.gov\/statutes\/statutes\/48\/XIX\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chapter 48, Subchapter XIX <\/a>governs the adoption of minors and guardianship. Each Wisconsin county has a <a href=\"https:\/\/dcf.wisconsin.gov\/map\/adoption\/publicadoption\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Public Adoptions Regional Contact.<\/a><\/p>\r\n<p>Prospective adoptive parents must meet several requirements before finalizing a public adoption. First-time adoptive parents must complete 25 hours of training. This training covers several topics, including childhood trauma and cultural sensitivity.<\/p>\r\n<p>Parents must also pass a home study. During the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.findlaw.com\/family\/adoption\/home-study-for-adoption-faq.html\">home study process<\/a>, a state-contracted adoption worker determines if the adoptive family and the household are suitable, safe, and prepared to bring home an adopted child. The home study also aims to ensure parents have the willingness and resources to care for the child on a permanent basis.<\/p>\r\n<p>The home study process includes:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Criminal background checks<\/li>\r\n<li>Medical evaluations<\/li>\r\n<li>Reference checks<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Public adoptions are often the least expensive type of adoption.
