Asbestos is a naturally occurring, fibrous mineral once lauded for its heat- and fire-resistant properties and widely used in the construction of buildings, ships, and other items where fire-resistance is valued. But it also causes serious illnesses<\/a> such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma. Because of these serious health risks, asbestos<\/a> is no longer used; but it still remains hidden in older buildings and other locations where it was used. This is why Wyoming and other states regulate asbestos-abatement projects.<\/p>\r\n

Notification Requirements<\/b><\/td>\r\n

Wyoming does not have a required notification form as long as the information required in the regulation is provided to the Wyoming Asbestos Program<\/a>. The notice can be provided by any entity involved in the project, but the form \u201cbelongs to\u201d the entity that first provides it.<\/p>\r\n

Either fax (307-777-6937) or email your notice as soon as it is available, and then follow it up with a hard copy through a mail service. The form must be provided to the program at least 10-working days prior<\/b> to the start of any renovation activity that will create or disturb Regulated Asbestos-Containing Material (RACM) and 10-working days prior<\/b> to the start of any demolition activity in a facility.<\/p>\r\n

Information for Homeowners<\/b><\/td>\r\n

Asbestos regulations in Wyoming do not extend to private residences, unless the renovation or demolition activity is being performed to allow the property\/facility to become public and private.<\/p>\r\n

The Wyoming Dept. of Environmental Quality suggests hiring an Asbestos Building Inspector<\/a> to collect samples of any suspect material that needs to be tested for asbestos content prior to disturbance, but they are not required to be used in private residences. Please be aware that samples collected by a homeowner or other person not currently trained as an Asbestos Building Inspector may not hold up in a court of law.<\/p>\r\n<\/td>\r\n<\/tr>
