 A district attorney (D.A.) represents the prosecution \u2014 or the state. Each state has district attorneys for each of its districts or counties. Their titles and responsibilities can vary by state. In Wyoming, district attorneys represent their counties and are called county attorneys.<\/p>\n\n <\/div>\n\n

There are two sides to a criminal trial<\/a>: the prosecution and the defense. The prosecution presents evidence to prove that the defendant is guilty of a crime beyond a reasonable doubt. The defense’s job is to ensure that the prosecution meets its burden of proof and the defendant’s civil rights are protected.<\/p>\r\n

In a criminal proceeding, a public defender<\/a> or a private criminal attorney represents the defendant.<\/p>\r\n

Alternative to Trial: Plea Deals<\/h2>\r\n

Not all criminal charges go to trial. Many times, prosecutors offer plea deals. These often involve reduced charges or sentencing<\/a>. Even if the district attorney offers a deal, they represent the state’s interests. They are not looking out for yours. It’s always a good idea to consult a criminal defense attorney. Do this before accepting a plea deal offered by the D.A.<\/p>\r\n
