Bruno Mars Drug Deal: Probation of Vegas Cocaine Bust

By Jason Beahm on February 08, 2011 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

A skilled criminal defense attorney can make a huge difference in the outcome of a case. Take the case of Bruno Mars, real name Peter Hernandez, who was arrested for cocaine possession at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. Mars, a singer/songwriter, has been nominated for seven Grammy awards.

Mars claimed that the incident, where he was arrested with 2.3 grams of cocaine, was "a foolish thing and [he] never used drugs before," the Associated Press reports. Mars was facing the possibility of prison time, so he is no doubt pleased that his attorney was able to work out a deal for him.

As part of the deal, Mars will plead guilty, but the offense will be wiped from his record if he keeps his nose clean for a year.  Mars will also pay a $2,000 fine, complete 200 hours of community service and drug counseling, the AP reports. Mars was a first-time offender, which can make a big difference when it comes to negotiating a plea bargain.

"We're extremely pleased the charge against Bruno is going to be dismissed," said defense lawyer Blair Berk, who represented Peter Hernandez.

Mars is especially fortunate to receive the deal, considering that he interfered with many of his possible defenses when he admitted to having cocaine and handed it over to the police. Lawyers say over and over again not to consent to searches and to remain silent, but alas, it seems that no one ever listens.
