Jerry Seinfeld Files Lawsuit Over Fake Porsche He Sold
Jerry Seinfeld may be living the Jay Leno dream of collecting cars with his comedic wealth, but unlike Leno, Seinfeld seems to have landed in some hot water after selling one of the pricier Porsches in his collection.
Jerry was recently sued because a car he sold at a big auto auction, believing it to be an authentic limited edition 1958 Porsche 356 A 1500 GS/GT Carrera, turned out to be, allegedly, a reproduction. Now Jerry has sued the car dealer he purchased the Porsche from, explaining that they are liable, as he was provided a certificate of authenticity, and paid a premium based upon the car's authenticity.
What's the Deal With Jerry and Porsches?
It's no secret that Jerry really likes Porsches. In fact, it seems obvious that he has a thing for them, given that the brand made up close to a third of his 150 car collection at one point. Also, cars are part of the comedian's new brand, much like his late night counterpart, Jay.
Jerry's new show, Comedians in Cars, pretty much just focuses on his love of cars while he hangs out with other comedians.
What About the Fake Porsche?
So, the story about the fake Porsche at the center of the lawsuit is a bit confusing as the car is actually a genuine 1958 Porsche 356. The fake part involves the "A 1500 GS/GT Carrera" part. It's believed that less than a 100 of these specific limited racing editions were built, and as such, those specific 356s command a significant premium over the normal ones (which can sell in the $500K range).
Interestingly, Seinfeld, his expert, the buyer of the car at auction, and the auction house's experts did not realize that the Porsche Jerry was offering up was not authentic. It wasn't until the buyer went to re-sell the car that a new expert discovered that the classic car's progeny wasn't as clean as everyone believed. One of the big issues that tipped off the last expert was the lack of pictures during the restoration process, which was rather recent.
Jerry seems to have expected the dealer he purchased the car from to resolve the matter. However, that didn't happen. So after he got sued, he sued the dealer. As of yet, the dealer has not responded.
