Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
The felony case against Randy Quaid has been dropped after the actor was jailed for a few hours for missing a series of court appearances.
Randy Quaid and wife Evi showed up two weeks late to court to answer to their charges. The couple was jailed briefly and then released after posting $100,000 bail each, Reuters reports.
The felony case was dropped against Randy Quaid as he was found to be less involved than his wife in the transaction of defrauding an innkeeper of more than $10,000 as well as conspiracy and burglary, the Associated Press reports.
As previously discussed, the couple were wanted fugitives for missing court appearances. The couple however, recently showed up to court after missing several court dates to answer the charges.
Evi Quaid pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of defrauding an innkeeper. She will have to perform 240 hours of community service.
The couple initially ran into trouble with the law back in September, after being accused of using an invalid credit card to defraud an innkeeper at the San Ysidro Ranch in Montecito.
The couple repaid the bill and hoped to resolve the case.
Although they pleaded not guilty to felony charges of defrauding an inn keeper in December, they skipped out on a handful of voluntary court appearances.
The couple has maintained the hotel incident was simply a misunderstanding. However, this incident has caused them to be mistreated by police and wrongly called criminals in the media, the Quaids said.
In addition, the couple has filed suit against one time business manger and lawyer Lloyd Braun, who they claim betrayed them by engaging in "gossip mongering."
The suit claims Braun -- in his position at an entertainment website -- inappropriately capitalized on his relationship with the Quaids for his own financial benefit by posting photos and information about the couple.
Braun represented Quaid more than a decade ago, back when he was an entertainment lawyer but says that when he quit the legal profession, he washed his hands of the Quaids.
