Shia LaBeouf Arrested at NYC Theater, Arraigned on 5 Charges
"Transformers" star Shia LaBeouf was arrested after causing a scene at a Broadway theater performance of "Cabaret."
Police reportedly dragged LaBeouf from the Studio 54 theater Thursday night and arrested him for disorderly conduct, criminal trespass, and harassment. A spokesman for "Cabaret" told The Associated Press that the "Holes" actor was "disruptive" during the beginning of the play and was "escorted out of the theater at intermission."
What's the beef with LaBeouf?
Life Is a Cabaret, Old Chum
It appears that the "Disturbia" star spent the night in a Manhattan holding cell and was arraigned Friday after his stunt at "Cabaret" on Thursday. Reuters reports that LaBeouf was arraigned on five criminal charges in Manhattan's Midtown Community Court before being released.
At an arraignment, a judge will announce the criminal charges levied against a defendant, determine bail, and often ask defendant for a plea. In LaBeouf's case, he was charged with:
- Two counts of disorderly conduct,
- One count of criminal trespass in the second degree,
- One count of trespass, and
- One count of harassment in the second degree.
All of these counts are misdemeanors or infractions in New York, and LaBeouf did not enter a plea at the time of his arraignment. This may have been at the advice of his Legal Aid attorney, proving that even movie stars can be afforded a public defender.
What exactly happened in the theater? Police told the AP that LaBeouf appeared "intoxicated or under the influence of some kind of drug." There haven't been any public intoxication charges mentioned, so the former child star may have dodged a tiny criminal bullet.
Not a Great Year for LaBeouf
This latest brush with the law wasn't the only legal downer in the last 12 months for the "Even Stevens" star. As you may recall, LaBeouf has had the specter of copyright infringement haunting him since the revelations about his film "HowardCantour.com" surfaced.
Maybe LaBeouf will come out the other end of this theater incident with only a bruised ego and some community service.
