Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
Frosted glass keeps falling on my head ... that's what owners of Ikea's Calypso frosted ceiling lamps must be humming.
To avoid potentially serious injuries from its falling ceiling lamps, Ikea has now issued a recall.
The company has issued a recall after nineteen complaints were filed with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The lamp's frosted glass shade spontaneously slips from its metal base and falls on unsuspecting people. At least three suffered bumps and lacerations.
Ikea will offer a refund or replacement. Approximately 38,000 were sold, but not all are affected; recalls are for those with manufacturing date codes between 1625 and 1744, which is printed on a sticker on the light bulb socket base plate. You might want to wear a helmet when looking for that!
Ikea is still reeling from two recent product recalls, one that killed eight toddlers, and another, two pets.
In 2016, Ikea recalled a line of dressers after it was found they were defective and tipped over on unsuspecting children, killing a total of eight children. Ikea's recall was met with only moderate, and deadly, success. Only about one million of the seventeen million dresser owners contacted Ikea to fix the defect. And unfortunately one family learned of the recall too late, after their two year old child died a year after the recall. According to the family's attorney, the family never received notice of the recall. The families of three of the earlier victims won a $50 million settlement from Ikea in late 2016.
In June 2018, Ikea recalled its Lurvig pet water dispenser after two dogs got their heads stuck in the dome of the dispenser and died. Ikea stopped manufacturing the dispenser immediately, and asked owners to return them to the store for a refund.
