California Firm Gives Staff $500 for New Clothes at Ann Taylor

By Stephanie Rabiner, Esq. on March 16, 2011 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

Pop it with citron.

Wait. The color or the fruit? And if we're talking about the color, just what exactly is citron? A bright yellow? A yellow-green? The vodka?

This blogger likes color, but she also likes to call a spade a spade. Or a yellow a yellow. But if she were to work at Newport Beach, Calif. law firm Cummins & White, she'd probably be obliged to talk citron and leopard print. And it wouldn't be pretty.

Law firms will do anything to protect their image, including offering up unwanted fashion advice to associates and support staff. And this is exactly what Cummins & White did. Management invited a local outlet of Ann Taylor to give a series of lunch presentations to the firm's female employees.

In addition to adding citron (and other color), female employees were told to ditch the hard lines and add a little ruffle to their tops and a bit of flair to their skirts, reports The Orange County Register. Surprisingly, there is no report that it was also suggested they leave the first four buttons of their shirts undone.

Because all female attorneys should dress as though they belong in an Ann Taylor catalogue, the firm also provided each attorney with a $500 shopping spree at the store. Miraculously solvent enough, they also extended the offer to support staff. Of course, the women had to be closely supervised during a personal consultation before they could spend that money. God forbid they forget to buy citron.

Or ruffles.
