Controversial Hate Group Lawyer on the Run?

By William Vogeler, Esq. on January 10, 2019 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

You know how things sometimes go from bad to worse?

Well, there's a rule about that: don't go there. Like, don't go from the frying pan to the fire.

Anyway, Jason Lee Van Dyke didn't learn that rule in law school. He apparently jumped bail, and it looks like he's a lawyer-on-the-lam.

Proud Boys

Van Dyke has been in trouble for a while, at least since he took over an extremist/hate group called "Proud Boys." Writer Joe Patrice, who hates the group, calls them "a violent, racist, misogynist, anti-LGBTQ organization."

According to reports, Van Dyke was arrested for making a false police report. He posted a $1,000 bond, but then things got worse.

He has been entangled in a nasty civil case with a "convicted felon." Tom Retzlaff, the defendant, says Van Dyke is a "lunatic" affiliated with hate groups.

In his latest filing in the case, Retzlaff says "Van Dyke was recently found guilty of the criminal offense of bail jumping." That's about as close as it gets to jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

Lost Jobs

Van Dyke says Retzlaff cost him his job at the district attorney's office. Retzlaff allegedly called Van Dyke a "flicking lunatic," a drug addict, a white supremacist, and a Nazi.

After losing his county job, Van Dyke went to work for a private firm. Retzlaff ran him down there, Van Dyke alleges, and made a complaint to the State Bar.

Soon after, Van Dyke took over the Proud Boys. In February, he meets with the State Bar.

Frying pan, fire.
