Ex-Cop Hired Women to Get Divorcing Men Drunk

By Stephanie Rabiner, Esq. on March 15, 2011 9:47 AM

Dirty cops and scheming divorce attorneys are nothing new. But when you put them together with a private investigator, fake dates with sexy blondes, and lots of alcohol, you might feel like you've landed squarely in conspiracy theory territory.

Beware anyone going through a divorce: this is a cautionary tale on what not to do to your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

Christopher Butler, the mastermind behind what is being referred to as the "Dirty DUI" scam, hired women to get divorcing husbands drunk and then arrested.

Butler, an ex-cop, was recently arrested and charged for theft and sale of drugs, reports the San Francisco Chronicle. During court proceedings the prosecutor explained the dirty DUI scam:

Attractive women would "date" one of his targets with the purpose getting the divorcing husband drunk. Christopher Butler would then use his law enforcement contacts to ensure that the men were stopped and arrested for driving under the influence. The wives' attorney would then "somehow" find out, eventually using the arrests to effect changes in custody or divorce agreements.

It's hard to say whether the dirty DUI scam is criminal, even though it's clearly underhanded. It's even harder to say what kind civil liability may be imparted on Butler. One thing, however, is for sure.

Do not try this at home, no matter how much you hate your ex-spouse.

If a judge finds out that you instituted your own dirty DUI scam (or anything like it), the chances that you lose in a divorce will increase exponentially. And if you think your lawyer is involved in something similar, run far, far away.
