Dog Keg Stand Photo Puts 2 College Students in Doghouse
Two college students have been charged with animal abuse for making a five-month-old puppy do a keg stand at a State University of New York off-campus party.
A picture of the puppy doing a keg stand, being held by an unidentified male with a SUNY Brockport sweatshirt on, went viral after it was posted on Twitter with the caption "Keg Stands n Bits!," United Press International reports.
Dog Keg Stand Potential Animal Abuse
In the photo, you can see Mya, a five-month old black Labrador Retriever puppy, being held by her hind legs with the beer keg's nozzle in her mouth. The two 20-year-olds behind the photo have been charged with torturing and injuring an animal, a misdemeanor, the Los Angeles Times reports.
Food and drinks that humans can safely ingest are often dangerous for dogs to lap up, according to The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Even ingesting a small amount of alcohol can cause vomiting, diarrhea, decreased coordination, central nervous system depression, and difficulty breathing in dogs. In severe cases, tremors, seizures, abnormal blood acidity, coma, and even death may occur.
If you think beer isn't a big deal, think again. It isn't just the alcohol. The hops in beer can cause an uncontrollably high body temperature than can lead to organ failure, seizures, and muscle tremors.
Accidental Alcohol Poisoning
Even if you're not a dumb college student who intentionally furnishes alcohol to a pup, be vigilant about unintentional alcohol poisoning. The typical sources of animal alcohol poisoning are from baked foods (such as rum-soaked fruit cake) and unbaked bread dough, which contains yeast, according to PetMD.
As PetMD reminds us, "dogs eat their own crap and drink out of toilets, so they may not always be discriminating enough to determine the best source of liquid [with which] to hydrate themselves." Play it safe by keeping baked goods and alcohol out of your dog's reach.
Say yes to adorable downward dogs and no to canine keg stands.
