Even Romanian Witches Have to Pay Taxes

By Jason Beahm on January 11, 2011 | Last updated on March 21, 2019

Bummed about having to pay taxes? You're not alone. Romanian witches are threatening to cast a spells with dog feces on the Romanian government over new labor laws that would force them to pay taxes on their income. Witches, in addition to, fortune tellers, models, valets and astrologers are vowing to hex the government for its taxing ways.

In addition to being reclassified as those practicing in a professional trade, under a new classification, they would have to declare their income and pay taxes on it.

The laws are designed to fight tax evasion, according to the Romanian government. The law will force Romanian witches and other related professionals to register their professions and pay 16% in taxes, as do other self-employed Romanians.

"Astrologers are seen as riddles, like wizards and so on. Most astrologers do things with passion. So, perhaps the government will get more passion than money, because not so many people come to the astrologer," said astrologer Maria Sarbu, in an interview on Romania's Realitatea TV, CNN reports.

"The people who run this country lead it with their head upside down," said witch Bratara Buzea. "We do need a pension too, after all ... you give something, you got to get back something. It's not the state who taught us witchcraft. There's no school where you can learn witchcraft."

Buzea said that if the new law goes into effect, she's prepared a little witches brew that will cast a spell on the lawmakers. "It's a little spell made of some dog feces together with a little pinch of soil and black pepper," she said.
