Grand Rapids Courthouses

Do you have court business in Grand Rapids? One would think that you would head straight downtown to the Kent County Courthouse. You may not know, however, that Grand Rapids has several court locations that handle various issues. The city hosts three Michigan trial courts: two district courts and one circuit court. It also has a juvenile detention center, a Michigan Court of Appeals office and two federal court locations.

  • 63rd District Court

    Note: This building houses the 63rd District Court. District Courts are courts of limited jurisdiction and handle many different legal issues including adult criminal misdemeanor cases, civil suits involving $25,000 or less, traffic violations and small claims suits. The 63rd District serves many cities in Kent County, including East Grand Rapids.

    Note: The 61st District Court is located in this courthouse. District Courts are courts of limited jurisdiction and handle many different legal issues including adult criminal misdemeanor cases, civil suits involving $25,000 or less, traffic violations and small claims suits. The 61rd District exclusively serves the city of Grand Rapids. For surrounding towns and cities, see the 63rd District Court.

    The 17th Circuit Court of Michigan is also located in the Kent County Courthouse. The Circuit Court handles appeals from the District Court as well as more serious civil and criminal cases, including adult felony cases and civil cases involving over $25,000. The Probate Court is also located here.

    Note: The Juvenile Detention center provides short-term care and custody for juveniles who can’t be placed in a less restrictive setting and who have violated the law or who are waiting court-ordered placement.

    Note: At this office of the Michigan Court of Appeals, you may file your appeal with the Grand Rapid Clerk’s office on floor “O.” The court room is on the main level. This court only handles appeals of cases that have already been heard at the trial court level.
