Free Legal Aid in Beaumont

Beaumont and Jefferson County are full of hard-working, law-biding citizens. Although we individually take pride in powering the region with shipping, manufacturing, energy, and other resources, almost everyone needs legal help from time to time.

    Lone Star Legal Aid isn’t just the largest provider of free legal services in Beaumont, the organization is the fourth largest provider in the U.S. Staff members and volunteers routinely work in education, housing, healthcare, employment, and family law matters.

    DRT serves people with disabilities by protecting their rights in housing, employment, education, and other aspects of life. To get started, call the intake line and be prepared to answer questions about your issue. Someone from the organization will get back to you “within a few days” to notify you of whether the organization can help you.

  • YMCA-Houston, International Services

    The YMCA’s immigration legal services team provides consultations to clients that drop-in on Wednesdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. ILS normally charges a $40 fee, but if your case is related to domestic violence, human trafficking, or another specific crime, the consultation may be free. You may sign in as early as 8:00 AM to ensure that you get an early consultation time.

    Instructions for Self-Represented (Pro Se) Litigants

    The District Clerk’s Office maintains records and processes court actions in Jefferson County. As a service to the public, the office provides instructions to people heading to court without the assistance of an attorney. The instructions provide definitions to legal terms and instructions for how to select a case type when filling out a Civil Case Information Sheet.

    Proceeding Without an Attorney (Pro Se)

    The federal district court maintains a webpage for individuals proceeding in federal court without an attorney. The page offers Guidelines for a Pro Se Plaintiff, tips for finding a lawyer, local rules, definitions to legal terms, answers to frequently asked questions, and more.

    The State Bar is the organization of lawyers that pushes the profession to provide better service to clients and the public. If you cannot find free services for your particular legal issue, call the referral line during normal business hours. A representative will take your information and refer you to a private attorney who will charge no more than $20 for a half-hour consultation. If for some reason the LRIS is unable to serve you because of either your address or the location of your legal activity, the service will refer you to a program that can help.
