Lil Wayne Loses Lawsuit, Must Pay $2.2M to Quincy Jones III
Lil Wayne has lost his lawsuit, and now must pay $2.2 million to Quincy Jones III.
The lawsuit was over the release of a biopic called "The Carter," MTV News reports. The rapper, whose real name is Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., apparently hated the movie and wanted to block its release. Jones, the film's producer, sought to release the film and wanted to be reimbursed for lost profits.
However, it is not the film or its portrayal of Lil Wayne that pushed the rapper and Quincy Jones III into the headlines. Instead, it was Lil Wayne's now-infamous deposition video, which was leaked to the media.
To say Lil Wayne was "uncooperative" during his deposition would be a severe understatement. The rapper responded to questions with unrelated answers, and repeatedly stated "I don't recall," "I don't know," and "I don't remember" -- often before a question was even asked.
He also seems to have threatened the lawyer who was asking him all of those questions.
Maybe if Lil Wayne had taken the deposition a little more seriously, he wouldn't be facing a $2.2 million judgment today.
For several months, Quincy Jones III had a production team chronicle Lil Wayne's life as he was putting together the album "Tha Carter III," reports MTV. But when the filming was complete, Lil Wayne was apparently not happy with how he was portrayed, calling Jones' work "scandalous." The rapper originally sued Jones to block the film's release, and also took issue with what he claimed was the unauthorized use of his music for the film. Jones countersued.
Lil Wayne was ordered to pay Jones $2.2 million based on the countersuit. During the trial, the judge stated that he was not amused by Lil Wayne's attitude and chastised the rapper for his display of "unreasonable conduct in the deposition" and "irresponsible behavior," reports MTV. Still, it's not clear if Lil Wayne could have achieved a different result in the lawsuit had he been more cooperative.
