Snoop Dogg Invests in Medical Marijuana Delivery Service
While marijuana is legal for recreational use in a few states, most marijuana users currently need the drug for medical purposes.
Despite being able to get the drug legally, access is still an issue for many users. Either their conditions prevent them from making frequent trips to a dispensary, or the nearest dispensary is a frequent target for crime.
Have no fear! Snoop Dogg is coming to the rescue! Well, not really. However, he is investing millions of dollars in a weed delivery service aimed at making access to marijuana safer and easier.
Snoop Dogg and Eaze
Snoop Dogg loves his marijuana. So, it's not a surprise to hear that he's investing in a medical marijuana delivery startup called Eaze.
The company is described as the Uber for marijuana. Through its app, Eaze provides on-demand marijuana delivery to medical marijuana patients. Currently, it has raised $10 million from investors.
Eaze is only one of several startups trying to capitalize on the needs of medical marijuana patients. Other marijuana delivery services include Dave, Canary, Meadow, Grassp, Nestdrop, and Speed weed.
This may sound like a great investment opportunity, but is marijuana delivery legal?
Unclear Laws
While use and possession of medical marijuana may be legal, delivery of the product is currently a legal gray area.
In Colorado, marijuana regulations only allow sales of marijuana in licensed dispensaries. However, the law allows adults over age 21 to give away one ounce of marijuana free of charge. So, an online market of marijuana deliveries done in exchange for donations has grown and flourished.
Similarly, Washington only allows marijuana to be sold by licensed producers at licensed retail shops. Winterlife, another marijuana delivery business, knows that its business model is technically a felony under Washington law. However, enforcement is a low priority in Seattle. So, Winterlife protects its delivery personnel by operating under code names and staying within Seattle city limits.
As for medical marijuana delivery in California, the state's law is unclear. Delivery services like Eaze and Speed Weed argue that delivering marijuana is legal under the state's Medical Marijuana Program Act. However, some cities have banned both marijuana dispensaries and delivery services.
With the law regarding marijuana delivery so unclear right now, Snoop Dogg could be set to either make millions or lose his whole investment.
