Young Moose Rap Beef Leads to Arrest on Murder Charges
Last week, an arrest was finally made in the 2015 shooting of Darrell Alston, better known to his fans as "Nazty." Police cited the on-going beef between Nazty and Kevron Evans, aka Young Moose, as the motivation for the shooting. However, Young Moose has not been implicated in any other way.
Police arrested Antonio Melvin for the murder of Alston, who is a friend of Young Moose and has appeared in the rapper's music videos. Police have linked the murder of Alston to the feud between the rappers due to so-called"diss tracks" that each released attacking the other with biting lyrics.
As Biggie Smalls explained, when rappers have "beef," it basically means that there's a dispute that isn't going to be worked out any other way besides violence. However, not all "beefs" are real. Often, rappers will manufacturer disputes for the publicity.
Young Moose's manager told reporters that his client and Alston were friends growing up, and that the two remained in contact, behind the scenes, while the public beef was playing out. Prior to the arrest of Melvin last week, police had other suspects, including another rapper, Shymoney, who also had an ongoing beef with Alston.
Young Moose Conviction in Question
Despite Evans not being implicated in Alston's murder, he is no stranger to tragedy and legal trouble. Last year, his brother, Kevin Evans, was shot and killed. Just two months prior to that, the Evans family (including both brothers, mother and father) was acquitted on various drugs and gun charges brought in 2014 and based in part on Young Moose's lyrics and videos. Moose was arrested again on other criminal charges related to guns and drugs, and pleaded guilty, receiving a three year sentence.
Still, the Evans family remains hopeful for an early release. Federal investigators have returned an indictment on corruption charges against the police department and the officer that allegedly targeted, harassed, and repeatedly arrested, Young Moose. The charge claims that officers planted weapons, cash, and other evidence during searches, in an attempt to frame Young Moose, and others. If the charges are proven, Young Moose's conviction could potentially be revisited.
