Top 3 Job-Search Tips for 2013

Job search tips can always come in handy, whether you're desperately seeking employment or think you're happy with your job.

No matter who you are, there comes a time when you need to look for a job or help a friend or family member do the same. It's not an easy process for anyone, especially in a tough job market. Before you dive right in, it helps to prepare yourself.

Not only should you prepare for the stress of looking for a job, but you can also prepare for the process itself so you can put your best foot forward. Here are three tips to keep in mind:

1. Clean up your social media presence. Unless your name is John Smith, you can probably be found on Google without much difficulty. That means any embarrassing or inappropriate tweets, Facebook photos, Google+ messages, or Pinterest pins could come up. Don't rely on your privacy settings; take the time to clean up your accounts now. Before putting anything on a social media account, ask yourself if you'd be willing to be judged solely on that one thing. If the answer is no, it shouldn't go up. Also brush up on the law in your state so you know if employers can ask for your username and password when you're in an interview.


2. Look the part. Credentials are good, but first impressions still count for a lot. Before an interview or networking event, choose your outfit carefully and spend a little extra time getting ready. Then make sure you're a little early to the meeting. Not only does that send the message that you are prompt and responsible, it also ensures you won't ruin the look by rushing and making yourself frazzled. Also remember that in-person meetings aren't the first time to make a good impression. Use professional-looking pictures on your LinkedIn page so potential employers can put a face with your name.


3. Consider starting your own business. If you're having a hard time finding that perfect job, it may be because that job doesn't exist yet. This might be the perfect opportunity to create your dream job by starting your own company. You won't know unless you start taking steps toward making it a reality. Figure out a business plan, determine your target audience, and talk to a lawyer about how you might incorporate. Then if it still seems like a good idea, you could make your dream a reality. Besides, you'd make a great boss.
