Block on Trump's Asylum Ban Upheld by Supreme Court
It didn't take very long for Apple to seek an injunction against Samsung to ban eight of their smartphones from the market.
Apple is actively seeking the ban of several old-model Samsung Smartphones including its Galaxy S2 and Droid Charge, reports Reuters.
As no one is likely looking at buying one of these smartphones anymore anyway, is there a chance that the possible Samsung ban will have an effect on you (the consumer)? Here's a look at three scenarios:
The worst case scenario for consumers is actually the best case scenario for Apple. Under the scenario, all of Apple's competitors will be banned from infringing the company's design and technology patents. As a result, when you head out to buy your next smartphone, your shopping decision may be made for you as the only thing available is the iPhone.
With the product ban looming, Samsung is reportedly already working on design workarounds for the infringing patent. What this means is that Samsung and other Apple competitors will make slight changes to their products that consumers will never notice. So new Samsung smartphones will still look and feel the same, but the underlying technology will be different enough to avoid the ban.
Companies like Samsung and other Google Android hardware manufacturers, hit the drawing board and come up with completely novel and innovative technology to challenge the iPhone and iPad. Come Christmas time, consumers will have so many drastically different, and compelling, choices that it will be an embarrassment of riches.
While we can hope for the best, and expect the worst, from Apple's ban on Samsung, the likelihood is that we will see more of the same. Apple's competitors are now legally motivated to not duplicate Apple products. But as the smartphone industry is such a cash cow as-is, it's unlikely these competitors will innovate too much.
