Christina Fulton Removes Nicolas Cage From Lawsuit Against Their Son

By Kit Yona, M.A. | Reviewed by Joseph Fawbush, Esq. | Last updated on

In Hollywood, the show must go on. In Los Angeles, the case will go on — but with one less actor involved. On March 7, 2025, lawyers for Christina Fulton filed a dismissal of charges with prejudice for her ex, Nicolas Cage, from her pending civil suit against their son, Weston Coppola Cage.

Fulton's suit seeks damages from her son for injuries inflicted during an attack in 2024. Her claims against Nicolas Cage focused on his enabling of their son despite his troubled history. As Weston Cage is 34 years old, Nicolas Cage's attorneys had derided the inclusion of their client in the lawsuit, calling it "absurd and frivolous."

A Child in Need

Actors Nicolas Cage and Christina Fulton dated from 1988 to 1991. One result of the relationship is Weston Cage. The two have grandchildren through Weston, although Fulton filed a suit in November 2024 against Weston's ex-wife over a "fraudulent restraining order" that keeps them from seeing their granddaughters.

Fulton's lawsuit against her son, filed in February 2025, claims that Weston physically assaulted her in July 2024. At first, Fulton reported that Weston had suffered a "mental health crisis" and that she wanted him to get the help she said he needed. Weston had a history of substance abuse issues and had been arrested for a DUI several years earlier.

Weston Cage was arrested for felony assault and the Los Angeles Police Department confirmed it was part of the incident with Fulton. While Fulton reiterated that she'd asked the responding officers to treat it as a mental health crisis, she later said she'd been "brutally assaulted" by her son.

Her civil lawsuit charges Weston with negligence, battery, assault, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and negligent infliction of emotional distress. Fulton claims that she suffered a concussion, a disfiguring eye injury, multiple contusions, PTSD, dental trauma, and psychological damages. She alleges that the injuries have affected her modeling and acting career.

When Does Parenting End?

Before dismissing the charges, Fulton's lawsuit accused Nicolas Cage of negligence, negligent supervision, and negligent undertaking. It claimed that Nicolas was fully aware of Weston's substance abuse issues and violent tendencies but enabled both instead of getting him help.

Fulton stated that Nicolas repeatedly bailed Weston out of jail, supported his "reckless" lifestyle, and made no effort to help him get the mental health assistance he needed. The suit also accused Nicolas of drinking alcohol with their son despite his substance abuse issues. Before removal, charges against Nicolas claimed that he knew or should have known the threat their son was and sought unspecified damages.

Weston's attorneys have described Fulton's lawsuit as a "money grab" from a person known for her litigious ways with family members. They agree with her original claim that Weston was having a mental health crisis.

Somebody Wins, Everyone Loses

Fulton's dismissal of the charges against Nicolas Cage came a day after their son announced his engagement. It's unknown if the legal move was in response to the pending nuptials. Fulton is seeking unspecified damages from her son.

By dismissing with prejudice, Fulton is unable to change her mind and refile against Nicolas Cage in this lawsuit. Despite the legal action, Fulton insists her greatest hope is that her son gets the mental health treatments he needs.
