Woman Infected with Herpes Gets $6.7M, BMW from Elderly Lover, 77

By Stephanie Rabiner, Esq. | Last updated on

Sexually transmitted diseases belong in the bedroom, not in the courtroom.

Okay, fine. They don't really belong anywhere. But they're better off in the courtroom, because at least then they're entertaining. And they didn't happen to you.

Tom Redmond, a 77 year old multi-millionaire (and former hair-care CEO), isn't so lucky. After he infected his ex-girlfriend, aged 56, with herpes, she sued him for failing to disclose his little problem and was subsequently awarded $6.7 million by a California jury. And a BMW.

During the herpes trial, Redmond and his ex, Patricia Behr, aired their infected laundry in open court. The pair met in 2001, but didn't enter the bedroom until 2003, reports California Lawyer. During their relationship, Tom Redmond invested $100,000 in Behr's fledgling business. The pair eventually broke up when, according to the periodical, he suddenly decided that he didn't mix personal matters with business.

Redmond alleges that the herpes trial was the result of a bitter end to the pair's relationship. But the jury found truth in Behr's allegation that, despite having had a discussion about his "sexual limitations," Tom Redmond failed to disclose the fact that he had been living with herpes for the last 25 years. He also continuously failed to wrap it up.

Let the story of Tom Redmond be a lesson to all of you out there. If you know, or should know, that you have an STD, the law may require that you tell your sexual partner. It may not be romantic, but it'll save you years of embarrassment and grief--the herpes trial hasn't ended yet, as it's headed for appeal.
